Jill Bliss in one of the pix(elated) judges, and we got a hold of her for an interview! hooray!
Carl Carbonell: Do you have a favorite drawing pen(s), and if so, what?
Jill Bliss: yes. black lines are all about the uniball deluxe micro pen [waterproof!]. colored lines are courtesy of zig memory system pens [japanese, archival ink]
sweet! okay, what or who are big influences on your work?
historical-artists-wise i guess a lot of the impressionists with
all that color and different marks on the canvas really influenced me. on a
daily basis i'm inspired by just about anything visual i come across and the
challenge of recreating it my way
good answer! What is your favorite typeface(if you've got one)?
oh man! that's a graphic designer question and i'm not really a
graphic designer! i like hand drawn fonts.
haha i'm with you on that one.
lithos pro. just kidding! i'm looking through photoshop for some choice ones right now
haha
im terrible with names, so i can't remember the name of the hippie
one
that's okay, we'll take the hand drawn answer. no worries. How
much time a day do you spend drawing?
it depends on the day and how much office-y work i have to get
done. when i do draw i can't go for more than an hour without taking a half
hour break at this point. carpal tunnel, arthritus, tendinitus... blah blah
blah
haha cool
usually i draw in front of the tv after hours
sweet. got any favorite tv shows to draw to?
hgtv or cnn or bad movies i don't have to really pay attention to.
actually, the best place to draw is a bar. i'll start a drawing at home, then
take it to a bar to finish the details and talk to friends.
that sounds awesome ha! Okay. here's a big question, how do you
feel about the relationship between graphic design and "fine art"? In
your opinion, whats the difference?
graphic design is meant to interact with other things/ideas
already existing in the world, while fine art doesn't necessarily have to, it
can be self-referential and insular.
awesome. good answer! At what point in your life did you decide for certain that this is what you wanted to do?
i don't feel like it was a decision so much as trying everything
else and failing. this is the only thing i *can* do.
hahaha thats awesome. Okay, here come some fun questions now!
ok, cool, fun!
How do you feel about high fives?
they're good, except when i'm sick like now and have sweaty palms.
ewww.
haha yea i guess that is pretty eww. What do you think about
Mississippi? Have you ever been here?
i've never been to ol miss. the closest to the south i've been is
jacksonville fl for a weekend
ah man! you're missing out!! (not really) How much fun is it to have "Bliss" as a last name?
i'm kinda obligated to be happy and positive, aren't i? thanks dad!
hahaha thats true. Okay, well here's the last question. Actually its more like a series.
ok
If you were shipped off to a desert island, and you could bring
THREE of each of these different categories, what would they be:
books
dk nature encyclopedia, field guide book to the particular
island... looking through my books trying to pick a third...
shoot all the serious reads are at home!
haha
i'd pick one serious read book to study over and over in the years
on the island. i like environmental/social nonfiction books.
very cool, very cool. okay, how about movies? (assuming this island has a tv and electricity)
rushmore, for when i'm sick
the squid and the whale, to remind me of imperfect human relations
i can't decide between bring it on or drumline for my fix of teen
drama!
hahaha
hey, graphic designer: how about the ending credits in drumline?
awesome, right?
haha i've not seen drumline actually! But if that's the case I
may just have to check it out.
oh you're missing out. it's got mr. mariah carey in it
mr. mariah carey?
and the "make 7up yours!" guy
i forget mariah's husband's real name
well shoot, i'll have to rent it soon and check it out.
oh! nick cannon
whaaat! she married nick cannon?
as far as i know.
haha that's crazy! i had no idea.
yup
wikipedia: On April 30, 2008, Cannon married singer Mariah
Carey at Carey's estate on the Bahamian
island of Windermere.
i
think he's 20 years younger or something crazy
haha wow! thats good to know...i suppose...
i keep up with the drumline crew
they're 10 years apart
haha
ehh...i guess it could be worse than ten years apart... creepier
things have happened...
ok, this has nothing to do with design! sorry for getting so off
topic!
haha thats totally fine. This always makes for a good interview.
But alas we have reached the last question, this ones sort of complicated so
bear with me while i explain
ok
i've decided that it is just impossible to pick three albums to
take to the island, so if you could pick three different bands/musicians to
take their entire discography of music with you, who would they be?
thanks for changing up that question, it's a toughie! i'd pick
bjork, abba, and...
hm, stumped by a third choice again!
oh!! i love bjork.
haha that third one always gets ya
i'd pick a compilation
i've found myself standing next to bjork 3 times in my life, and
all 3 times i run away! she's the only person in the world i'm scared to meet,
i guess!
haha thats awesome.
so intimidating!
Well, those are all the questions I have for ya! Anything else
you'd like to say to all the lovely folks that happen to check out the Pix(elated)
blog?
thanks to everyone for reading the blog, and to you carl for the
questions!
Awesome! well it was a pleasure interviewing you Jill, thanks so
so much for you time, and have a super evening!
you too! have a good weekend!
Take a walk around your property and draw a layout of it.
